Sports are never dull. Sometimes, not being dull isn’t enough. Every sport has a limit. When you stretch it, you take it to a whole new dimension, and you get ‘extreme sport’. It does not matter that many sporting activities like rollerblading, skydiving, scuba diving, and bungee jumping are adrenaline pumping already. Sports enthusiasts want to stretch the limits of these sports and test man’s endurance. Here are some of the most dangerous sporting activities people do for fun.

Base jumping: In one word: suicide. In this sport, you have to jump from a tall building  or antennae, bridge or cliff to establish yourself as a base jumper. The risk is higher in this extreme sport because the jumping is done from a very low height, sometimes as low as 150m, in which the jumper may have only five seconds to open his parachute and land.

Aggressive rollerblading: Jump, grind, slide, and flip. Easy? Not if you are on skates and doing these moves on edges, rails, stairs, walls, ditches and defying gravity in every possible way. Aggressive skating professionals look ‘cool’ in all respect, wearing their rollerblades like regular footwear. One would be tempted to think that footwear like this is now high fashion, if not for the hazard associated with it.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA): These guys take extreme to the extreme. It’s a mishmash of all martial arts combined with plenty of old-fashioned wrestling and boxing. So elbows touching chins, and jaws smacking knees are very common and so is blood splattering all around. It’s  definitely not a sport for the faint-hearted, even if just for watching.

Free diving: Someone once forgot to take his or her breathing equipment while deep sea diving, and now suddenly it has become an extreme sport. Here, divers dive without breathing equipment to see how far they can go down in a single breath.

Things to Consider Before Enrolling Kids in Organized Sports

Sports are a great way for children to learn a lot about the way the world works. This is one of the main reasons so many people support organized sports. However, parents need to be careful before they sign their children up for any sport because they have the ability to ruin the experience for them. Below are two things that all parents need to consider before they sign their kids up for an organized sport.

Readiness: It’s understandable that parents want to see their kids having fun and playing with other kids their own age, and organized sports are great outlets for this, but you need to make sure your child is physically and emotionally ready. For example, while it’s exciting to see your three year old son in the back yard kicking a soccer ball around, that doesn’t mean he’s old enough to play soccer. On the other hand, he may have the ability to understand the game and be physically able to play the sport with other three year olds. Just make sure your child is mentally, physically and emotionally ready before you sign him up for sports.

Interest: One mistake that many parents make when it comes to their kids playing sports is being biased towards a particular sport. Before your child will be able to receive all the benefits organized sports have to offer him, he has to be excited about it first. If you want your child to play football, but he really wants to play baseball then you should let him play baseball. It’s important that kids are able to play the sports they’re interested in, otherwise they will just resent the sport and everything associated with it – including the life lessons that can be learned from it. Many children make the decision not to play sports at all because their parents try to force them into playing a particular sport. Don’t make that mistake.

Teenagers and the Sports Available to Them

Teenagers are very interested in socializing with their friends. If you are a teen, you know this to be true. You are likely looking for a way to spend time with your friends outdoors. After all, you can only do so much at the mall and the movie theater. There are plenty of outdoor sports to choose from. The only catch is that you have to ensure that you are choosing an activity that your parents approve of as well. This may or may not include sports such as skydiving, mountain climbing, dirt bike racing and other extreme sports.

You might want to get together with some friends for team sports such as volleyball, soccer, football, baseball, or tennis at the park, school or someone’s backyard. Other sports that you can play with your friends include street hockey, basketball and paintball. There are many group sports available for those of you that enjoy spending time with friends.

The great thing is that most of the sports listed above can be played by everyone, which makes it easy to organize informal “tournaments.” To do this all you need to do is get a large group of friends together, decide what sport tournament you want to have and divide into two teams. Most of these tournaments consist of several games and the team that wins the most wins the tournament. Of course, you can really get crazy and allow more than two teams to join and offer prizes to the winners.

While group sports are fun, they aren’t for everyone. Many people need to participate in a competitive sport, but one where they don’t have to depend on anyone else to win. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this at all. In fact, many of these sports are sports that can be continued to be played after high school. A few examples include hunting, bull riding, barrel racing, skateboarding and many more!

What is Adventure Racing?

Image via Wikipedia

While many people have heard of the sport called adventure racing, most people do not really know what it entails. Adventure racing consists of teams that must diligently work through various complex challenges and competitions of different lengths, different orders, and in various locations to reach a finish line ahead of the other teams.  Some of the challenges the teams may need to compete in include running, horseback riding, mountain biking, paddling, or having to work as a team to cross a river. The challenges may also involve maps, navigation, or orienteering of geo caching, however no GPS systems are allowed.

The concept of adventure racing essentially combines all of the characteristics of a triathlon with a lot of dirt and mud, and then also adds in challenges that teams must compete in over an extended amount of hours, days, or months. It can almost be explained in the sense of an obstacle course that meets a scavenger hunt due to the fact that they are racing against other teams to complete all of the tasks first.

However, adventure racing is much more involved than both obstacle courses and scavenger hunts. Thankfully though, participants are made aware of the challenges they may face ahead of time, and this allows them an adequate timeframe to prepare ahead and build endurance while training to complete the specific tasks.

The most exhilarating part about adventure racing is that no two people will have the same experience, not even on the same team within the same competition. This increases the draw of the sport because it is truly always an adventure, making it true to its name. There are many television shows that show these types of challenges in action. Television shows like “Amazing Race” and “Cannonball Run” continue to attract viewers to the idea of adventure racing, as well as demonstrate how popular this sport is becoming in our culture.
