Some Tips to Keep My Calendar Filled with My Outdoor Activities

It must be in the job description that moms have a tendency to be disorganized and a bit crazy. Sure, ask me what time my kids’ appointments are, where they need to be at a certain time, and what school projects they have going, and I can tell you. However, when it comes to my personal life, there is a lack of organization.  And as a mom that has a secret passion for extreme sports like snowboarding and rock climbing just to name a few, it is even extra hard to get in my workouts and sporting activities when my life is not organized and planned out to a tee.

I have come to realize that life is just disorganized and that a little disorganization doesn’t hurt anyone.  However, I did need to find ways to ensure I had time to hit the slopes and the rock climbing wall at my local gym.  Plus, I needed to make sure I had time to hit the stores to keep my equipment up to date and to buy the latest outdoor gear.  So along with using my favorite online source, Canada 411, to make sure I was travelling the most efficient route and following links to the stores to do some online shopping; I also have a few other tips to help you plan your days around kids and your life.

Everyone has electronic organizers and phones that have calendar functions, but I have found that nothing works better than having a physical calendar in your hand where you can write appointments and notes.  A simple calendar datebook works wonders.

I also have folders for everything.  Everything is labeled and written on appropriately so that I know what is inside and what needs to go where.  Lastly, make sure to toss things out that are not necessary.  Less clutter helps you stay organized.  And staying organized helps you keep your fun activities on your schedule.

A Guide to Snorkeling

Snorkeling can be a great outdoor sport to try if you want to see some marine life. Popular with holidaymakers all over the world, snorkeling can be an exciting and interesting pastime to try. However, there are a few tips and techniques you need to learn if you are to snorkel safely.

Snorkeling is designed for people to swim at the upper limits of a body of water and still be able to breath for extended periods. However, occasionally you will want to go under the water to a point where your breathing tube no longer reaches the air. It is important to learn how to clear your tube of water after you do this.
Snorkeling
Before you submerge fully, stick your tongue into breathing tube. After you have swum underwater and are beginning to run out of breath, return to the surface so that your breathing tube is over the water. To clear the air, remove your tongue and blow hard and the water will shoot out of the tube.

Cleaning your mask is also an important thing to learn as they can become foggy and reduce visibility after extended periods underwater. The only way to successfully do this is to lift your head out of the water and remove your mask. Then you are free to give the goggles a wipe. You can also place a small amount of saliva in the goggles before you dive. This will help keep the mask clearer for longer, although you will still have to lift your head out of the water and clean the goggles eventually.

Snorkeling can be a fun an exciting outdoor sport for the whole family. By following the above steps, you can ensure that your snorkeling sessions are enjoyable and can last a long time, without to much unnecessary returning to the surface of the water.

Must Haves For a Day on the Bike Trail

Mountain biking is a great sport. It can be exciting, challenging, and a great workout, all at the same time. A day on the bike trails is fun, but you should be sure to bring along a few items. You will need supplies, food and water, and tools, but you should try to keep your carry-along items to a minimum.

Food and water are likely the most important things to bring with you. There’s nothing worse than getting to the end of a trail and finding out that you have no energy left to get back to your car! You need to fuel your body to have energy, and without food your focus lags, which can cause you to get into an accident. Of course, water will keep you hydrated and maximize your performance on the trail.

You should also make sure to have a couple of basic tools with you. You should have a set of Allen wrenches, since Allen bolts are the most commonly used on mountain bikes. With all the bumping on mountain trails, bolts can become loose, so it is a good idea to carry a couple of replacements along with your wrench set. A chain tool can also be useful. Of course, your tools may wind up useless if you don’t have the emergency supplies you need. Have an extra tube for your tires, a mini-pump, and a patch kit in case you get a flat.

Finally, since you have likely left your car at the base of the trail, make sure you have good classic car insurance, and take your insurance papers with you. That way, if anything happens while you are on the trail, you will have everything you need to file a claim when you get home.  It’s usually a good idea to bring a cell phone for emergencies, too!

Things to Consider Before Enrolling Kids in Organized Sports

Sports are a great way for children to learn a lot about the way the world works. This is one of the main reasons so many people support organized sports. However, parents need to be careful before they sign their children up for any sport because they have the ability to ruin the experience for them. Below are two things that all parents need to consider before they sign their kids up for an organized sport.

Readiness: It’s understandable that parents want to see their kids having fun and playing with other kids their own age, and organized sports are great outlets for this, but you need to make sure your child is physically and emotionally ready. For example, while it’s exciting to see your three year old son in the back yard kicking a soccer ball around, that doesn’t mean he’s old enough to play soccer. On the other hand, he may have the ability to understand the game and be physically able to play the sport with other three year olds. Just make sure your child is mentally, physically and emotionally ready before you sign him up for sports.

Interest: One mistake that many parents make when it comes to their kids playing sports is being biased towards a particular sport. Before your child will be able to receive all the benefits organized sports have to offer him, he has to be excited about it first. If you want your child to play football, but he really wants to play baseball then you should let him play baseball. It’s important that kids are able to play the sports they’re interested in, otherwise they will just resent the sport and everything associated with it – including the life lessons that can be learned from it. Many children make the decision not to play sports at all because their parents try to force them into playing a particular sport. Don’t make that mistake.

Teenagers and the Sports Available to Them

Teenagers are very interested in socializing with their friends. If you are a teen, you know this to be true. You are likely looking for a way to spend time with your friends outdoors. After all, you can only do so much at the mall and the movie theater. There are plenty of outdoor sports to choose from. The only catch is that you have to ensure that you are choosing an activity that your parents approve of as well. This may or may not include sports such as skydiving, mountain climbing, dirt bike racing and other extreme sports.

You might want to get together with some friends for team sports such as volleyball, soccer, football, baseball, or tennis at the park, school or someone’s backyard. Other sports that you can play with your friends include street hockey, basketball and paintball. There are many group sports available for those of you that enjoy spending time with friends.

The great thing is that most of the sports listed above can be played by everyone, which makes it easy to organize informal “tournaments.” To do this all you need to do is get a large group of friends together, decide what sport tournament you want to have and divide into two teams. Most of these tournaments consist of several games and the team that wins the most wins the tournament. Of course, you can really get crazy and allow more than two teams to join and offer prizes to the winners.

While group sports are fun, they aren’t for everyone. Many people need to participate in a competitive sport, but one where they don’t have to depend on anyone else to win. There is absolutely nothing wrong with this at all. In fact, many of these sports are sports that can be continued to be played after high school. A few examples include hunting, bull riding, barrel racing, skateboarding and many more!

An Introduction to White Water Rafting

As its name might suggest, white water rafting is an outdoor sport which involves riding a raft over white water. This white water is usually created by a rough patch in a body of water, such as a river, where the water moves rapidly throughout varying terrain. The rafts are usually propelled by paddles or oars. Depending on where you go, you can ride smaller, individual kayaks, or you can ride a large raft with a group of four to ten people. There are different options available for how you go white water rafting. For example, you can go for several days or make it day trip.

Contrary to what you may think, not all white water rafting rivers are natural, some are man made. These man made rivers are purposely made to be geared towards different skill levels so that even children and families may participate together.  No matter what your age, everyone that goes white water rafting is required to wear safety gear such as a helmet and a life jacket. While safety gear is important, it is also important to understand that some upper body strength is required for this sport. In fact, serious white water rafters train for this event by working out to build their upper body strength. Competitive white water rafters may train for months before a tournament.

If you are going to go white water rafting, you need dress accordingly. This means you need to be ready to get wet and dress for the weather as well. In warmer weather, it is easier to dress appropriately because not only will it be warm out, but the water will also be warmer than it would be during the cold season. During the cold season, it is recommended that you wear several layers of clothing, made of synthetic fabric to prevent the clothing from getting wet and clinging to you, which will make you cold.

An Introduction to Hunting

Hunting wildlife has always been a popular fall and winter sport. The best part about hunting is that not only is it an enjoyable sport, but it also brings about the satisfaction of providing food for the family. Once upon a time, hunting was the only way to find meat to eat. Often times, hunting is usually a time of bonding for male family members and friends. However, some women enjoy hunting too. If you are considering embarking on your own hunt, there are some things you must review first.

One of the things you need to do to prepare yourself for your first hunt is to find your local wildlife agency and become familiar with the requirements for hunting. This will ensure that you will not be in violation of any restrictions that could potentially spoil your hunt.  Each jurisdiction maintains different regulations regarding types of species that can be hunted legally, and also regarding land access.

As a beginning hunter, the next step is to enroll in a hunter education program that will allow you to familiarize yourself with identifying the various juvenile and adult birds or animals that you will be hunting. Additionally, you will want to become familiar with the patterns of the animals in the landscape and the landscape of the area that you plan to hunt in.

When this has been completed, it is time to apply for and purchase your hunting license, as well as purchase your firearm and enroll in a firearm safety class. It is an absolute must to keep in mind that you need to always be aware of others around you in order to make sure that everyone stays safe. After all of this red tape is addressed, go ahead and get out there and enjoy your first of many hunting adventures.

Can My Pet Participate in My Extreme Sport?

Image via Wikipedia

That would all depend on what the extreme sport is, the conditions under which it takes place, and exactly how your pet would participate. This entry will walk you through questions to ask in order to determine if pet involvement is a good idea.

First of all, if it was necessary to travel to an extreme sport venue, how did your pet handle the trip? You may need to wait a few days before letting your pet participate with you.

What is the extreme sport? If it’s skiing-either snow or water, then there is the possibility that your pet might be able to participate if you carried it on your body in a special sling or perhaps tucked into your jacket.

If you snow ski, this is one area where you would need to consider the weather conditions. Some pets cannot take the cold like others can, so even if they were able to share your body heat, the lower temperatures might still affect them.

The altitude is also another concern. If you are very high in the mountains, as you might be in Colorado, the high altitude may affect your pet. You would need to see how well your pet was adjusting to the altitude change before letting him participate with you.

If you water ski, you would first need to make sure your pet enjoys being in the water. Some do, but others don’t.  You would also need to consider the water temperature. Very cold water coupled with a stiff breeze can make a pet go hypothermic, just like a human. This can occur even on the warmest days if the water temperature is low enough.

The last thing to make a decision on is pet insurance. If your pet does participate in your natural adventures, you might want to have a policy that covers medical bills and other expenses.
