Not everybody wants to go to the gym and lift weights or go for a run in their neighbourhood. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t exercise, though. No matter what your fitness level is, regular exercise is important — it will keep your heart healthy and your body slim, in addition to giving you a “high” from regularly releasing endorphins. If the activities above don’t appeal to you, don’t give up! There are a number of fun activities that don’t seem like exercise at the time, but still give you all the positive effects.

One example is hiking. Hiking is a good way to burn a lot of calories, build muscles and spend time in the outdoors. It is also a fun activity to do with a loved one — pack a picnic and some water, and head out down a trail.

Hiking lets you see the outdoors in a more personal setting. Rather than the forest being something that you simply drive by when you’re on your way somewhere else, hiking lets you experience the forest in person. This gives you the increasingly-rare opportunity to get away from concrete jungles and suburban streets in order to see something different.

Like all exercises, though, you need to follow a few safety standards. For one, you should hike with the correct shoes — street shoes are not acceptable for any hike of more than an hour or so, as they do not shield you from the sticks, rocks and other things you’ll step on while you hike. They also do not provide the ankle support you need to walk for long periods over varying terrain. If you don’t wear the correct shoes, you open yourself up to both injury and long-term stress-related problems from repetitive, incorrect motion.

You should also dress for the terrain. Raincoats are key, no matter what, as is dressing in layers. If you wear a sweatshirt, t-shirt and thermal undershirt you can strip down if the weather heats up. This is a far better option than having the weather cool off but not having any clothing to put on to protect yourself.

So pack a lunch and hit the outdoors. You’ll get some exercise, pack on some muscle and feel great.

Snow and hail, sleet and cold rain. Winter has come and it seems destined to stay. You are, of course, furious. The days are dull and the adventures are lost. It’s too cold to get out and seek them.

You find yourself inside Chicago apartments, condos in Boston, or homes in Charlotte. You can’t get outside.

Don’t waste all that time you’re spending inside. Don’t sulk, waiting for the hours to be bright again. Instead, go ahead and move your body–take advantage of your forced imprisonment and gain strength! Here’s how:

Scissor Kicks. The need for speed requires more than determination. It demands endurance. Your legs must be conditioned properly to maintain the intended levels of activity. Scissor kicks help to achieve the necessary toning. Lie flat on the floor, with your hands tucked behind your head. Lift one leg as high as you can and then bring it down in a controlled way, repeating the gesture with the other leg. Increase the pace, creating a scissoring motion. This will help condition your lower body.

Squats. A quest for extreme adventures can’t be accomplished without strength. Squats allow you to work several muscle groups at once. Stand erect with a weighted bar placed against your shoulders (be certain you can handle the extra pounds). Carefully bend to a squat–your knees bent and your back straight. Return slowly to an upright position and repeat. Your arms, hamstrings and glutes will be tightened.

Balance Boards. Having good balance is important. Without it you’ll suffer from injuries. Balance boards allow you to master your sense of balance, learning composure and patience. The exercise (despite being minimal) will also burn calories, as you’ll be constantly trying to correct your posture and stance.

Use these tricks to develop stamina, strength and improved coordination. You won’t feel so bored when you’re stuck inside during the coldest months of the year.

You might recall or have heard the popular song ” cruising down the river on a Sunday afternoon” – a pleasant, placid vision- totally opposite the extreme outdoor sport of staying afloat as you guide your kayak through the thundering torrent of white water. White water kayaking is an outgrowth of white water rafting that began gaining popularity in the 70′s. It is considered by some the most challenging of extreme outdoor sports.
Veteran Kayakers seek the wildest, maximum turbulence rivers – grade six on a scale of one to six- around the globe. In North America, the Colorado river in the Grand Canyon and the Jalcomulco river in Mexico are the choice for maximum adrenalin surge fans. The Colorado river has taken its toll in fatal accidents. White water sports , both kayaking and rafting require upper body strength to effectively handle the raging waters. If not naturally posessed, the upper body strength must be developed. Certainly a desirable condition contributing to good health.
Not all rivers are natural for white water sports fans. The support industry has developed man made rivers designed to cover the grade one to six range of turbulence. This concept allows developing white water skills to tackle the the more intense grades of turbulence and also allows white water adrenalin surges for the entire family.
Apprpriate Gear and Clothing a Crucial Factor
Helmets and water shedding outer clothing are mandatory items to keep dry although one must be prepared for wet faces and hands at all times. Warm weather season kayaking and rafting are easier to cope with. Believe it or not, white water fanatics ply their sport during cold seasons as well, requiring multople layers of synthetic clothing for warmth and prevention of wet clothes sticking to one’s body, an unbearable condition. The full line of appropriate gear and clothing can be found on line.

If you are looking to try a new outdoor sport, why not get out and about on a jet ski? This unique and exciting form of sport can be just the thing if you are looking to spruce up your outdoor sporting activities. Here are a few things to bear in mind as you are getting started.

The first step is to attach the automatic engine shut up tag to your body. Each jet ski comes with a tag that turns off the engine if it is removed from the jet ski. The idea is that if this is clipped to you and you fall into the water, the jet ski will stop and you will be able to get back on easily, without having to swim after one that is still moving!

The throttle is located on the handlebars, and to increase your speed you gently squeeze the throttle to make the engine more powerful. While you are still in the dock, be sure to keep your speed to a minimum. It may also be a good idea to go slowly in the open water as fell if you are on your first jet skiing trip. Practice making turns whilst going at a slow speed so that you can learn the basics of maneuvering the machine. Once you get the hang of the controls, you can start to open the machine up a little and go faster.

It is also important to keep an eye on the surrounding area, especially if you are jet skiing on the open ocean. It can be easy to get carried away and drift off into areas that may not be safe, such as rocky or shallow stretches of water. By being vigilant at all times, you can ensure that your jet skiing trip is an enjoyable one, without any unforeseen difficulties.

That would all depend on what the extreme sport is, the conditions under which it takes place, and exactly how your pet would participate. This entry will walk you through questions to ask in order to determine if pet involvement is a good idea.

First of all, if it was necessary to travel to an extreme sport venue, how did your pet handle the trip? You may need to wait a few days before letting your pet participate with you.

What is the extreme sport? If it’s skiing-either snow or water, then there is the possibility that your pet might be able to participate if you carried it on your body in a special sling or perhaps tucked into your jacket.

If you snow ski, this is one area where you would need to consider the weather conditions. Some pets cannot take the cold like others can, so even if they were able to share your body heat, the lower temperatures might still affect them.

The altitude is also another concern. If you are very high in the mountains, as you might be in Colorado, the high altitude may affect your pet. You would need to see how well your pet was adjusting to the altitude change before letting him participate with you.

If you water ski, you would first need to make sure your pet enjoys being in the water. Some do, but others don’t. You would also need to consider the water temperature. Very cold water coupled with a stiff breeze can make a pet go hypothermic, just like a human. This can occur even on the warmest days if the water temperature is low enough.

The last thing to make a decision on is pet insurance. If your pet does participate in your natural adventures, you might want to have a policy that covers medical bills and other expenses.

Completing a triathlon is no easy feat, even when you take it at your own pace instead of trying to beat everyone else to the finish line. Triathlon events feature three distinct segments: swimming, bicycling and marathon running. To accomplish even one of these tasks takes training and discipline–to complete all three requires triple dedication as well.

Train for each segment of your triathlon as if training for an individual race. Ideally, training for the swimming portion can be done in a long pool with lap markers, but if that isn’t available, you can make do in a shorter one. It is advised that you practice swimming in open water at least one or two times before the actual triathlon, because even if you have access to a pool for swimming laps you will want to have the experience of what swimming in open (and potentially murky or cloudy) water is really like.

The cycling segment of the triathlon is pretty straightforward; really, the only way to train for it is to bicycle often. Pay special attention to going up and down hills, and you may want to bicycle during windy weather in preparation for the actual weather during the event; the Ironman Triathlon is known for having crosswinds during the cycling portion of the event, and it’s true of many other triathlons as well.

For the marathon run, do cardio workouts to increase your endurance and practice sprinting and timing yourself. If you have no experience with marathon running, be sure to learn the proper form to start the race in—the method of launching yourself off the starting line helps give you a little extra boost. Finally, be sure to visit a triathlon store and to purchase good athletic gear. Department store stuff won’t do–think of your comfort and don’t skimp on the budget.

Diving is an excellent sport for those seeking adventure and the chance to view a world that many will never see in person. However like any other extreme sport, diving has its risks and dangers that you should be aware of should you decide to take up this type of sport.

Whether you are scuba diving or snorkeling, any type of diving can come with dangers that you should be aware of.

Oxygen loss is one of the biggest dangers associated with diving in any form. Tanks can be lost, damaged or in some cases, lose pressure. Should this happen, a diver has to make it to the surface before the potential of drowning becomes a reality. Checking the tank before diving is paramount to being as safe as possible. This can be done under the water so that it is certain that it is functioning at its full potential. Check the lines as well; they are your supply of oxygen.

Along with oxygen loss, there is a condition call the bends. This is when a diver surfaces too fast or even descends underwater too fast. What happens is that high levels of oxygen go into the bloodstream and hurts a person’s circulatory system. This can cause death if not treated immediately and even then, sometimes it is fatal. Always dive with a partner so if there is trouble there is someone that can aid or get help.

Marine life is another consideration in diving that you should be fully aware of. Not only are sharks an issue but jellyfish, eels and stingrays are all marine life animals that can cause harm or even death to a diver. Be aware of what is around you at all times and if you do see one of these creatures, stay away from them. In the case of a shark, it can sometimes be best to abandon your dive.

When the phrase extreme sports is used by a person the first instinct is to think of really “out there” sports. After all, the name of the sport says it all – - its extreme. However, extreme sports seems to be growing in popularity and the general public’s opinion of extreme sports has changed.

What used to be a name only reserved for extreme snowboarding, skiing and hiking is now also reserved for other sporting events such as mountain climbing, surfing, BMX racing and sky diving just to name a few. With such a wide range of events it can only be expected that betting sites and gamblers all across the world will take advantage of it.

Here are some of the foreseeable sports that sports betting sites could potentially start taking bets for:

- Surfing

Surfing has some major competitions all over the world as well as a huge following. Sports betting sites could easily take bets on who will get the most points, who gets the perfect 10 and other elements of surfing.

- BMX racing

Just like any car or horse race, BMX racing could have bets taken on the various races. Each biker in a BMX has vast experience which would make it possible to have odds on each racer.

- Snowboarding

Snowboarding could be made into a race downhill in which the betters place bets on who would finish first, who does the most extreme tricks and other elements.

At the moment, none of the sports betting sites take bets on extreme sports. With the exception of the X-Games, extreme sports are still under the radar of gambling sites. However, that won’t last long. Sports betting sites are out to make as much money as possible. As extreme sports starts to grow in popularity, so will the possibility of betting sites taking bets on the outcome of certain events.

Whitewater kayaking is taking the sport of kayaking and making it into an extreme sport adventure. It is obviously similar to white water rafting but instead of using a raft to brave the rapids, a kayak is the form of transportation.

Whitewater kayaking is being able to face the most treacherous rivers and waterways. A person taking on this sport should be adept in using a kayak as well as having experience in very rough waters.

Kayaks that are ideal for whitewater use have to be stronger than typical kayaks. This is because the rough waters that are navigating can really put a beating onto the kayak. In that same vein, only a one person kayak is used due to safety issues; it is simply not safe to have two people in the boat during a whitewater trip. These kayaks can range from short to long; it all depends on the individual and what they want to achieve on their excursion.

There are various aspects of whitewater kayaking. Some people do it for fun and this can be what is known as river running where the kayak is taken down a whitewater river that is not as treacherous as others. These may even have spots that are flat combined with rapids in other areas. These are trips that can range in time spent. Some may want to make it a day trip and others might want to spread out their time into an entire week; it’s up to the individual.

Creeking is another form of whitewater kayaking, which is the most extreme form. This type of whitewater kayaking is where a person takes on the most treacherous waters in the world. These are typically part of a competition but can also be part of a trip for extreme whitewater enthusiasts.

Smell the bacon frying in a pan over a campfire as you watch the orange and red sunrise streak over the tops of the mountains. Soon, you’ll fix the pancakes and the eggs for a hearty meal to give you energy for the day.

The mountain range topped with deep green pine trees extends as far as the eye can see. Off in the distance, you hear the bugling call of an elk. Ah, this is the life for hunters, anglers, hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. Put on your favorite pair of True Religion jeans and enjoy the day.

Elk River is a haven for the outdoorsman because it has so much to offer. You can ride your ATV during the summer over backcountry trails and logging roads. You can feel the exhilaration and watch sprays of white snow trailing your snowmobile as you ride over those same trails in the winter. Cross-country skiing over pristine snow is also available during the wintertime.

If you enjoy water, there are deep mountain-blue lakes, rivers and streams. You can go fly-fishing, canoeing and kayaking. If you can’t bring your own canoe or kayak, you can rent them locally.

Various campgrounds are available with hookups for your RV or spots where you can pitch a tent. From the campgrounds, you can hike various trails to places such as Granddad Bridge, the overlook to Dworshak Reservoir, Elk Butte, or to the waterfalls at the Upper, Middle or Lower Falls.

You can see magnificent wildlife in the Elk River area and the nearby Clearwater National Forest. Majestic elk herds roam the mountains. Moose graze in the mountain meadows. The sky is filled with ospreys and great blue herons. Often, you can see golden eagles soaring through the deep blue sky.

The term “extreme sports” actually got its start through the media. It is used to describe sports where the normal activity is “taken to the next level.” In other words, if you skateboard, the idea of extreme skateboarding means going faster, launching yourself from higher ramps or heights, or performing more difficult acrobatic moves such as flips, turns, and jumps.

Many people who participate in extreme sports feel that the term should not even be used unless there is actually an element of danger involved. Whether that danger comes from attempting a harder stunt or pushing one’s physical limits further isn’t the point-the fact that it has to be present (in their mind, at least) for the sport to be considered extreme is.

Extreme sports have become so popular in some areas; there are even places that cater to those who want to participate in their favorite activity. Some places only provide for one activity; for example, whitewater rafting. Another place may be large enough or located in an area where practically every type of extreme sport imaginable can be done.

This can actually be a good idea, as there is a time and place for everything. You don’t want to practice your extreme sports moves in areas where families are on skiing holidays with their children, so if you can find a place that allows extreme skiing, that problem is solved.

If you participate in extreme sports, then that is fine. Just remember that where there are extreme sports, there can be extreme injuries. No element of danger is worth losing your life or becoming disabled for. So, continue to use safety gear and common sense when practicing your extreme sport, and don’t try to talk someone into doing more than that person is or feels capable of doing.

Skydiving is a sport that is considered extreme and adventurous. While many fear jumping out of an airplane, others find it exhilarating and thrilling. It happens to be one of the most popular of all of the extreme sports.

Learning to skydive can be intimidating but knowing what to expect and what to do is important for the best experience; start by reading up on skydiving. Once you feel that you have read through most of the material on skydiving, find an instructor. Whether you use the Internet or the phone book, find a company that has certified instructors. You can even check out the United States Parachute Association for recommendations. Some take part in tandem jump training, which means you go at the same time as your instructor while strapped together.

Static line instruction is an option that many like since there is no way that a jumper will have to fear not opening their chute in time. This is because a static line is connected to the aircraft.

Free fall lessons are yet another way to learn to skydive by the jumper making the jump with two instructors but get to free fall by themselves for approximately a minute of time.

All the different styles of preparing for skydiving take from brief training sessions to numerous hours of training. For instance, static line lessons require the student to complete at least six hours of training that is very serious in nature. However, tandem jumping only requires a short training session since the jumper is strapped to the instructor.

When learning to skydive, or any extreme sport, it is important to ask as many questions as possible. Since many extreme sports can be dangerous if the right knowledge is not known, making sure to know the most you can learn can ensure a more safe and enjoyable experience.

Scuba diving is an excellent outdoor activity that is perfect for those that love the water but there are a few things to know in advance before trying it out for the first time.

There are diver requirements that have to be met before embarking on a scuba diving excursion. Physical conditions are a factor in whether you may or may not be able to take part in scuba diving. Breathing issues, heart ailments and high blood pressure are a few of the conditions that may need you to check with your physician first.

There may be forms to fill out such as a guarantee that you are able to take part in diving and all that it entails. This includes the demands on your body such as faster swimming and toting large and heavy dive equipment.

The correct equipment must also be a factor. This can involve taking the cost into consideration as well as what type of equipment is needed. Typically, fins and a wetsuit are the basic foundation for diving as well as the oxygen tank. As well as knowing which equipment to have, you must also know how to use it. Knowing how to use your breathing apparatus is paramount to your safety. Some dive shops rent equipment, which could be a good idea for a beginner.

Also, when taking a cruise or traveling to a beach locale, some excursions allow first time divers to learn about scuba diving right then and there. Florida is the top travel destination in the world with billions of visitors every year to see the beautiful reefs. Reserve your Florida vacation home rentals today to beat the crowds in scuba diving lessons. These crash courses have a trainer available during the dive to ensure the safety of everyone.

Scuba diving is a sport that allows to participant to behold the most beautiful views and a feeling of being at one with the ocean, like no other. However, before deciding upon this adventure, get the facts so that you can have a safe and enjoyable time.

Mountain biking is a hobby for some and for others it’s an extreme sport with many tricks and stunts. Although its history is unclear, a form of mountain biking has been around since the late 1800′s. The first community was created in California but it may have been created by John Finley Scott, who constructed the first type of mountain bike in 1953.

There are several terms familiar to those who enjoy mountain biking. The different types of mountain bikes are: Cross country, BMX, dirt jumping, Cyclo cross, Freeriding, downhill, street and urban, trials and single speed.

Cross country is a type of mountain biking that simply means what riding up and down various, hilly areas.

BMX mountain bikes have 20-inch wheels and are most likely to be seen at dirt jumps are skate park areas. They are especially good bikes for stunts and tricks.

Dirt jumping is a category where the mountain biker jumps over dirt piles that are man made. While in the air, stunts are performed.

Cyclo cross is a combination of mountain biking and road. The mountain bikers race within the course and off of it, through rivers and over obstacles.

Free riding is a form of mountain biking that is of the freestyle category where mountain bikers choose the right course down a mountain for their own preference and are allowed to express their individuality.

The downhill form of mountain biking is simply racing downhill. The mountain bikers on these courses will race as fast as they can, making the ride extreme and intensely thrilling.

Street and urban mountain biking is where a rider uses man made objects to ride on such as ledges and stairs in urban areas. Tricks are performed that utilize these objects.

Trials use a different type of mountain bike that has 20-26 inch wheels and smaller frames that are lower to the ground. Obstacles are jumped or “hopped” over for showing off concentration and balance.

Single speed is a unique form of mountain biking where only one gear is used. This is similar to a fixed gear form of biking.

Although wakeboarding has been an extreme sport that has been around since the 80′s, the first skurfer was created in 1985 by Tony Finn. Wakeboarding involves the joining of skiing and surfing all rolled up into one sport. It can be thought of as a combination of a lot of different sports such as snowboarding, water skiing and surfing but once the skurfer was built, wakeboarding was known as skurfing.

To participate in wakeboarding, users need a small sized surfboard that is towed by a boat. The rider has moves similar to surfing. In the past, riders would attempt to remain on the board themselves since foot straps weren’t added until 1995. However, this new addition to the board gave the riders more security in staying steady on the wakeboard, or skurfer.

In the 90′s skurfing because an extreme sport with a large following and even had competitions that were televised on ESPN. However, the popularity started to wane. It wasn’t until the new designs of wakeboards were developed by Herb O’Brien. This new board changed the face of skurfing into its forever name of wakeboarding. This new board let riders do many more stunts and moves than before. Riders could now submerge the board into deeper water and it was able to be used by all ages, as long as the rider was over fours years of age. More inventions were added to the boards from Herb.

Dimples, curved construction and better designs allowed for additional stunts and tricks. In 1989, the World Wakeboard Association was created and there has been a popularity surge. Wakeboarding has even been added to the X Games due to its popularity. Many tricks and stunts can be performed on a wakeboard and with the innovative construction and design, riders can compete in competitions and show off their technique.

With difficult economic times, families are tightening their belts concerning extended family vacations. Many families have turned away from the expensive vacation to Gator World In Florida, and instead opted for vacations in the great outdoors. Instead of expensive hotels, families are turning to camping, and staying in smaller towns where prices haven’t skyrocketed.

Many of these families are looking for vacation destinations that are fresh, affordable, and offer a wide variety of activities that meet the families budgetary constraints. Some are looking for vacation locations that have not been inundated with commercial building and high-priced and elaborate lodging. For many, discovering the great outdoors in a state like Idaho is as easy as finding information on a sports betting affiliate via the internet.

As the summer months turn to fall, the changing leaves in Idaho create a beautiful landscape that even the hardest-to-inspire families will fall in love with. The landscape of Idaho continues to be untouched by skyscrapers and big-business, giving outdoor enthusiasts a picturesque look at what Mother Nature was intended to look like.

For many that have spent time in Idaho, the lack of major metropolitan cities is a refreshing look at the great outdoors in the western United States. Those that have visited Idaho have fallen in love with small towns like Elk River. With a populations of 150, this small town understand the livelihood that vacationing families bring, and residents cater to the every need of those that visit.

Located in the pristine mountain valleys of Idaho, this small town offers hundreds of things for visitors to do, including hiking, fishing and hunting, snow shoeing, snowmobiling and world class cuisine.

And it’s not just a summer destination. Many families are spending the Holiday together in the scenic Clearwater National Forest, and bonding together in the heart of the nation’s outdoors.

For those that has a love for extreme sports, outdoor fun and the water, white water rafting is the perfect combination. Since the 1970′s, white water rafting has been a popular activity where users utilize an inflatable raft to travel along rivers and other water areas with rapids. Done on what is called white water, the rough waters both thrill and excite rafters of all ages. There are six grades of white water rafting levels from a level one with easy to navigate waters to a grade six, which is where the rapids extremely rough and have large rocks and objects making them hard to navigate.

While white water rafting can be dangerous at times, there are levels for a perfect fit for the novice and expert alike. Guides are also available to ensure that the rafters get to their destination safely while having the time of their lives. Safety gear is fitted in advance so white water rafters are ready to tackle their adventure.

One of the benefits of white water rafting is the gorgeous views and scenery. The places that are traveled are for the most part, natural habitats with not much intervention from mankind.

While some consider white water rafting a usual activity or hobby, others find it to be the perfect thing to experience while on vacation. Areas with whitewater rapids usually have package deals that allow the vacationer to experience this unique opportunity. There will be regulations that must be followed as well as rules and safety advisories but they are there for the whitewater rafter to be able to enjoy their trip safely.

The cost of white water rafting varies but typically the highest cost is the travel arrangements to be able to take part in this outdoor activity. Those that live close enough can experience whitewater rafting without much damage to their bank account.

Hang gliding is an extreme sports that allows the participant to feel like they’re flying. The difference in hang gliding and other sports such as sky diving is the fact that the person with the hang glider is in control of their surroundings and have to depend on themselves. Hang gliders use a light aircraft that has no power other than the natural wind that carries them soaring through the air. Most of the time the hang glider launches from the edge of a cliff or mountain; somewhere already high up. What starts as a jog then transitions into a running start. Once airborne, they then shift their bodies to guide the aircraft where they want to go.

Speeds are maintained by either by tipping the nose up or down on the glider. An upward motion slows down the glider and a downward motion makes the hang glider speed up.

The parts to a hang glider are simple. There is aluminum tubing that makes the shell of the hang glider while parts such as a keel, crossbar and control bar are part of the steering mechanism. The sail obviously is what makes the hang glider fly through the air and then there are many different wires that complete the package, as well as a harness that keeps the rider secure and safe.

When hang gliding, all areas where the flight’s path leads must be clear from any obstacles, including people. Many venues that offer hang gliding will have trainers that can help a novice get off of the ground. It is important to listen and learn all about safety measures and basics so that the ride is seamless and free from harmful events.

Persons that are experienced in the sport of hang gliding can glide for hours, using the air currents as their guide.

For the mountain climbing adventurer, there are five mountains that should be added to any climber’s repertoire. While there are mountains that are only accessible through airplane drop off points, these five mountains are perfect for a novice climber as well as an old pro, depending on which one is chosen to conquer. Some should be left to the well experienced but others are excellent for the novice as well.

Mount Kilimanjaro is located in Africa and while it is the tallest there, topping at over 19,000 feet, it is excellent for all skill levels since you don’t need a lot of experience or costly equipment to climb its heights.

The Matterhorn is an impressive mountain with almost 16,000 feet of Alpine mountain. It encompasses the Alps of Italy and Switzerland and offers different routes for different skill levels. This makes it an excellent choice for any experience level.

Fitzroy and Cerro Torre, Patagonia are part of the Andes Mountains and are in Chile and Argentina. Both mountains are over 10,000 feet and due to the nature of the mountains with sheer faces and unstable weather, these are more technically advanced climbs.

For those living in the United States, Mount McKinley is an impressive 20,320 feet located in the Yukon Mountain Range. This mountain is categorized as an extremely hard mountain to climb. While the climb is easy technically, the weather is what makes it challenging.

Mount Everest is jaw-dropping at over 29,000 feet. It stands as the highest mountain on earth and only a few have conquered its heights since 1952. Located in the Himalayas, a permit has to be acquired to even attempt to climb it. Fortunately, there are things to do at the base of the mountain as well so that anyone visiting Mount Everest has something to experience.

These days, it’s all too commonplace to read frightening headlines declaring Food and Drug Administration or Environmental Protection Agency-enforced manufacturer recalls on everything from children’s toys to automobile break pedals to dog food, for being unsafe, poisonous or hazardous for families, loved ones and pets. It’s no wonder why parents get nervous letting their kids consume food, enjoy playtime or even breathe air outside of the household. Obviously, when headlines began popping up decreeing that chemical emissions from recycled rubber playgrounds and sports fields for kids (supposedly safer than turf or grass, thanks to the soft, injury-reducing texture), parents and families had major cause for concern.

Luckily, in July 2010, just in time for back-to-school (and back-to-playground) season, the Department for Environmental Protection released findings from their latest study, insisting that the recycled rubber is very safe, and super child-friendly. Also called “crumb rubber infill”, the recycled rubbery pieces found in playgrounds and children’s sports fields across the country are mostly comprised of old automobile tires. Parents and teachers praised the material when it first became popular for it’s characteristic cushiony feel and ability to prevent injury if a child falls, compared to its decidedly less forgiving predecessors, concrete and artificial field turf.

Recently, hot debate arose surrounding the rubbery pieces for their rumored chemical emissions, which studies out of Europe discovered might be harmful to plants surrounding the fields, and ultimately, the children close by as well. Thankfully, results from a study done right here in the United Stated (conducted at the University of Connecticut and analyzed at the Department of Public Health) proved the unsettling news completely wrong. In fact, the study uncovered that the chemical emissions from the rubbery pieces were actually less harmful than the chemicals found in typical outdoor air. The rubbery material found in indoor turf fields created slightly higher levels of chemical emissions, but as long as the facility is ventilated normally, it poses no health risk. So breath easy, parents and families – there’s one less thing to worry about when it’s time to send your child back to school!

As well as being an effective way to get exercise and stay in shape, sports can be a great way to get out and about and see the great outdoors! For those bored of playing sports in indoor arenas and courts, there are a variety of outdoor activities that can be engaged in.

If you like the ocean or large rivers, why not try one of the many water sports available? Canoeing is a popular choice, along with kayaking in more localized areas. If you are a real thrill seeker then white water rafting is an exciting option – just be prepared for a bumpy ride! If you prefer the ocean, jet skis and water skiing are two excellent choices, both very popular with holidaymakers. Indeed, you can even go snorkeling and scuba diving if your interests lie under the water!

Equally, if you do not wish to stay on dry land but are not that keen on the water, you can even take to the skies in a number of sports! Paragliding is a popular choice, although if you prefer the sensation of falling rather than gliding you may want to try bungee jumping. If you really have the stomach for it, why not go all the way and parachute out of a plane? It certainly is more exciting than playing regular sports!

For those that prefer to stay on the ground, outdoor sports such as biking can be a good choice. Horse riding is also an excellent option for people who want to try something a little different. Potholing and cave diving can be great for those who wish to go underground and take a look at the inside of the Earth, although it is worth pointing out that they are probably not the best choice for people who suffer from claustrophobia!

Outdoor sports can be a great way to stay fit and get out and about. Although sports like kayaking and skiing are relatively well known, one of the least heard of outdoor sports is archery. This sport can teach valuable skills such as control, strength and patience. However, taking up archery is not something you can do overnight, and there are a few things you have to do before you go shooting.

First of all, you have to decide what kind of archery you want to take up. The main types of archery are hunting, target shooting and traditional. Hunting archery, despite its name, is not actually used to kill wild animals, rather it is more of a category of archery. It can require the use of either compound bows or longbows, a simple bow that forms a ‘u’ shape. Target shooting utilizes bows that are aimed at stationary targets rather than live animals, while traditional archery resembles more the kind of archery that occurred in the past.

Once you have chosen your style of archery, you need to find an organization that you can join to practice. The type of group that you join will depend on your chosen style of archery. Hunting groups are fairly common, while groups that support target and traditional forms of archery require a more detailed search.

After locating a relevant organization, you can ask for lessons. Many groups will put this on for you, while there are also dedicated schools and instructors who will be willing to teach you how to shoot for a cost. Once you have had a few lessons, you will probably need to purchase your own archery equipment. You can borrow the instructor’s to start with, and you teacher will probably help you in selecting the right type of gear – just don’t buy any equipment until you’ve had a few lessons!

Skiing can be one of the most exciting outdoor sports you can try. Unfortunately, due to the terrains you will be skiing on and the amount of equipment you need to do it, it can be neither cheap nor quick to learn. Here are some of the basic things you need to do to learn how to ski.

Skiing is a complex skill, and unless you know somebody who is an accomplished skier, you are going to need to take lessons. Although this will cost you money, it is probably that fastest way to learn how to ski. Many ski slopes and resorts offer beginners courses for those on their first time on the snow.

The first skill you will need to learn is to how to walk in skis. One technique that is used is called the herringbone, where you point your skis away from each other and walk forward. Be sure to place your foot on the ground with some force to ensure you don’t slip over. You can also walk uphill in skis by pivoting your body to the side and carefully placing one foot ahead of the other on the slope.

The bunny hill is the first stop for many skiers. This is usually a group of small slope that has a rope for skiers to get to the top. When skiing down, you can use the ‘pizza’ and ‘french fries’ technique. This is where you point the skis in a straight line to speed up (like french fries), and close them together to form a ‘V’ shape when you want to slow down (so it looks like a slice of pizza). Once you have mastered this a few times, you can begin learning to turn on the snow.

Skiing is an enjoyable outdoor sport to try. Although the cost and level of skill required can be off putting, it is something that everyone should have a go at at least once!

Skiing is an intense outdoor sport, proving to be exhilarating and dangerous at the same time. It is important when skiing that you do not get ahead of yourself and take on a course that is above your current ability. Luckily there are systems in place to help skiers determine which slopes are right for them.

The bunny hill is the beginner’s slope, where fresh starters can practice basic skills such as controlling their speed and turning. Once you feel comfortable with this, the next level of ski slopes are marked on maps with a green circle. This indicates the level of beginner, but one who has learnt the basics of skiing. Green circle slopes are usually fairly short and contain few or, more likely, no obstacles.

The intermediate trail is marked with a blue square. These courses are slightly harder than the beginner slopes, sometimes containing steeper areas and more obstacles that need to be avoided. You should complete a few green courses before trying one of these.

A course marked with a black diamond indicates the hard level of slopes. Not only do the trails get steeper and more narrow, but there may also be the presence of moguls. These are small hills made out of snow which must be traversed or avoided during the course.

The next level of slope is marked with double black diamond, or sometimes a black diamond with an exclamation mark in it. This is a course for highly accomplished skiers and should under no circumstances be tackled by beginners or people who are uncomfortable on their skis. There are also double black courses that have ‘EX’ written in them, which are designed for experts and skiing professionals. Once this has been completed, the only other thing to try is heliskiing which is where you are dropped from a helicopter onto the slope and you make your way from there. Although exciting, this last type of course is very prone to avalanches and should only really be attempted by a small number of people!

Many people think that all outdoor sports are high adrenaline and exciting like bungee jumping or skiing. However, one of the most relaxing and enjoyable outdoor sports is fishing. Of all the types of fishing, bait fishing is probably the easiest way to catch fish. There are a number of things you must do if you want to be successful in catching fish.

The first step is to choose a suitable location to go fishing – this includes selecting a body of water that actually has fish in it! If you look in the local paper you may find information on regional fishing sites. Alternatively, asking the owner of the nearest fishing or angling store will usually provide some great tips on where to catch fish.

The next thing to select is the equipment. Depending on what kind of fish you are trying to catch, you will need different fish hooks. The hook is designed to fit into the mouth of the fish and different species have different size mouths, so it is important to research which kind of hook you need to catch your fish. Additionally, you need some bait to lure the fish in. Although most fish eat the same kind of thing (insects and aquatic life) you can usually use the same baits over again, however it is worth mentioning that different fish have preferences for different food, and you can maximize your fishing efforts by using the fish’ favorite food.

Another important thing to remember when you are fishing is that you have to be patient! Fishing is notoriously a waiting game. It can take literally hours for one fish to become interested enough in your bait to take that all important bite. If you are the kind of person who needs results instantly, it may be worth reconsidering whether fishing is right for you!

Although much of the skill of fishing lies in choosing where to fish and which baits to use, probably the most important part is also the most difficult – the actual reeling in of the fish! Although many fishermen have their own techniques when reeling in a fish, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of a successful catch.

Firstly, you have to choose the appropriate fishing technique depending on your locations. For example, if you are fishing in a river or stream where the water is moving quite fast, you may have to think about attaching weights to your line in order to keep it in the right place. Similarly, fishing in a large still body of water like a lake will require the use of a bobber (a floating piece of plastic fitted to the line to keep it on the top of the water).

Cast your line and wait for a fish to take the bait. When you feel the fish start to pull on your line (which may take a long time) tug your rod backwards and upwards in order to hook the fish through the mouth. Once your fish is snagged, you can begin reeling him in.

The most important thing to remember is to keep you line taught. A loose line will give the fish the opportunity to wriggle free and ‘throw’ the hook out of his mouth. Lift your rod with your arms whilst reeling the fish in at the same time. It is also advisable to try to steer the fish into the open water where there are no plants of debris under the surface that can tangle the line.

Once your fish is close enough, use a net and grab him out of the water. Once you have removed the hook from his mouth, all you need to decide is whether you want to keep the fish or throw him back. Be sure to wash the fish first if you are going to eat it.

Camping is a great outdoor sport to try if you want to get out and about in a way that is safe for the whole family. A tradition that has been passed down through families for years, camping can be an enjoyable and exciting way to get back to nature. There are a few things you need to do to make your camping trip a success.

The first thing you need to do is make sure you pack the correct equipment. Camping is an outdoor activity and so you should be prepared to face the elements. Although camping is traditionally done in summer months when it is warmer, it is a good idea to bring plenty of warm clothes just in case. You can minimize the extent of the damage adverse weather conditions can do to your trip by checking forecasts before you go, but it is better to be safe than sorry – especially if you are camping in a foreign country.

A knowledge of the area you will be camping in is vital for your camping trip. If you are staying local then this is relatively easy, but if you are in an unfamiliar area then be sure to take maps and guides with you so that you know where you are and where local facilities are at all times. After all, you may need things like local streams to collect drinking water if you run out.

One of the best parts about camping is cooking your own food in the great outdoors! Camp fires are as old as camping itself and there’s nothing quite like roasting some meat over a fire you have made with your bare hands. Toasted marshmallows and smores are also a popular choice on any camping trip, so be sure to bring enough for everybody!

If you are looking for a traditional yet exciting way to spend some time outdoors, why not try camping? Sleeping out under the stars is a great way to get back to nature. Of course, nobody wants to sleep under the stars without a cover, so you will need to put up a tent.

The first thing to do (once you have bought and unpacked your tent) is to find the best location. A flat surface that is a little higher up than the rest of the land is perfect. Flat areas are great because they will be more comfortable for your back, while the extra height ensures that if it rains you won’t get rain water in your tent.

Clear away any debris on the ground such as sticks and stones and lay your tent on the ground. You then have to secure your tent to the ground by using tent pegs. These attach to the inner lining of the tent and fasten to the ground to stop your tent blowing away.

Next you have to make your tent stand up. Connect all of the poles that came in the kit and place them in the top corner at one end. It is a good idea to pull on the guy rope at the same time that you are doing this at this will make the tent more secure in the long run. Once you have done this, take your flysheet and throw it over the tent. You can align the corners of the sheet to the corners of the tent to ensure it fits securely. Peg all additional ropes in place in order to secure them. Once this is done, you should be able to take a step back and look at your erected tent! The tent is now ready for use -have fun!

Of all the outdoor sports to try, rock climbing is one of the most versatile and exciting. Suitable for all stages from beginner to expert, rock climbing is a great way to get some exercise and see a bit of nature. If you want to try your hand at rock climbing, there are a few steps you should complete to make sure you are safe.

The most important thing is to decide what kind of rock surface you want to climb. Both indoor and outdoor rock climbing is available and while you do eventually want to get out and try it on an actual rock face, it is a good idea for starters to try on an indoor slope.

The next step is to take lessons, as there is a definite art to rock climbing that is more difficult than it looks. Your local rock climbing gym will not only be able to teach you how to climb, but will provide you with all the equipment necessary. This includes a hard hat, safety ropes and efficient climbing gear.

Once you have had a few lessons and are looking forward to climbing outdoors, you probably need to buy your own equipment. You can always just rent from certain facilities, but in the long run it makes more sense financially to buy gear yourself. The apparatus you use should be fully optimized to account for your size and your weight, as well as whether you are male or female. Durability is important, so make sure you’re not afraid to skimp on the price.

When all these steps have been completed, you are ready to go rock climbing outdoors! It is safer to go with a partner to have someone who can watch your back and help you out if you get stuck. Locate a suitable rock face in your local area and have fun!

Running a marathon is an amazing accomplishment. As well as being both physically and mentally challenging, training for a marathon can be a great outdoor sport to get you fit and boost your confidence. However, running a marathon is not something you can just do – it takes weeks and months of training and proper exercise before you a fit enough to run one.

It is a good idea to give yourself six months to prepare for a marathon. If you are already a runner and can run for 30 minutes without a break, find out when your planned marathon is and begin training for it half a year away. If you are not at that stage yet, give yourself more time and start running to improve your stamina.

Having the correct running equipment is a good idea when running a marathon. You can buy specially designed running outfits and pieces of equipment such as water bottles that are crafted to fit around your hand, although the most important equipment by far is your running shoes. The right pair of shoes can decide whether you finish the marathon or not and depend on a number of factors, such as the shape of your foot and the way you place your foot on the ground when running. You can get your running gait body type measured professionally to ensure you buy the right type of shoe.

It is also vital that you know how to stretch and warm your muscles before you run the marathon. Muscles can be susceptible to injury during such extended periods of physical activity. Warming up and cooling down when you go for your training runs will ensure that your muscles get used to being worked hard and will not give way at vital moments in your race. There are also a number of creams and supports you can buy that will help you get over any muscle injury you do sustain a lot quicker.

Paragliding can be one of the most exhilarating sports there is. There are not many feelings that can be compared to soaring through the air on a man-made pair of wings. Of course, to go paragliding safely and securely there is a range of equipment you need to get your hands on first.

The canopy if perhaps the most important part of the glider. This is the fabric that will make up the wings or your apparatus, and is fixed at the top via a series of metal ribs. Canopies are usually made out of polyester in order to be waterproof, and are sewn together with tough synthetic threads.

Of course, you need to be safe at all times, and that’s where the parachute comes in. This device is attached to the pilot in the unlikely event of an accident to ensure that he or she can land safely. Alongside this is the harness, made out of 4 safety lines. The harness is made up out of a front and back part, which support the left and right hand side of the pilot.

The pack is the part of the aircraft that connects the glider to the pilot. There are a variety of designs that a pack can be based on, with each one being optimized for different weather conditions and different levels of comfort. The higher the pilot is in the pack, the more stability they have on a flight, although the less room for maneuvering there is. Traditionally more experiences pilots are seated lower down.

A paraglider pilot also needs a collection of gadgets on their flight. As well as an altimeter and windmeter to display height and wind speed, a variometer is also important in order to inform the pilot of the speed of ascent of descent. Throw in a wind sock to tell you the director of the wind and you’re ready to go!

Scuba diving is a fun and exciting sport to take up if you want a change from engaging in regular activities. It can be a great way to see parts of the world that many people do not get to see – namely because they are underwater! However, as you will be underwater for extended periods, scuba diving can be dangerous if you don’t know what you are doing. There are a number of things you should do to prepare for any upcoming scuba diving excursion before you get in the water.

Firstly, you should be absolutely sure that you WANT to go. This may sound silly, but many people have a tendency to get dragged into things they do not want to do. If you have a fear of the water or are unsure about your diving capabilities, you may want to think twice. After all, there are plenty of other trips you can take, such as on a glass-bottom boat, that allows you to see the marine world in splendor.

If you are sure you want to dive, the next step is to rent your equipment. You can do this yourself or, if you are a beginner, there are many companies that can provide you with all the relevant diving gear and arrange a trip for you. Make sure your equipment meets all the latest safety and design standards to ensure you will be safe underwater.

The only thing to do now is to find a location in which to dive! Again, if you are going with a chartered company they will be able to arrange this for you. If you are looking after this yourself, be sure to keep in mind seasonal changes. You should also be sure to monitor the weather closely, as you do not want to get caught scuba diving if a storm is approaching!

Kayaking can be an exhilarating outdoor sport. There are few things that can match the feeling of rushing through the water in your own boat, solo. However, kayaking can also be very dangerous as there may be periods when you are submerged under the water. There are a few things you need to learn in order to stay safe in the water.

It is a good idea to have at least some basic knowledge of CPR before going kayaking. The likelihood of having a serious accident where you will need to use it is very low, but it is always a good idea to be prepared for the worst situation. There are many groups and health organizations that can teach you CPR if you don’t know it already.

Another important thing to have when going kayaking is a floatation device. Life jackets are that standard piece of kit that is issued. A helmet is also a good idea, just in case there are any rocks underneath the surface of the water that you can’t see.

You should always check the weather before embarking on any expedition. Kayaking in bodies of water, particularly in fast moving rapids, can be dangerous at the best of times, and you certainly don’t want to get caught outside with a storm coming in! Similarly, if you are going to be using your kayak in the ocean, check for times of high and low tide.

It is also a good idea to let people know you are going kayaking, especially if you are heading out on your own. A simple note on the refrigerator can do the trick, although you could always bring an external spectator along with you to keep an eye on you in the water. Just make sure the person brings a good book to read!

If you have become bored with playing the usual sports such as soccer, football and baseball, why not try one of the numerous extreme action sports available? These activities are guaranteed to release endorphins and adrenaline to give your sporting lifestyle a boost!

One extreme sport that many people try first is bungee jumping. Once a strong elastic cord is fastened to your body by a number of harnesses, you jump from a high point such as a cliff top of from a bridge with only gravity to bring you down! Once the cord has been stretched to its capacity, you spring back upwards through the sky.

Bungee jumping is actually very safe as a number of safety techniques and back up harnesses are attached to each jumper in order to avoid an accident. Still, the experience can be very scary and feel highly dangerous, although if you are looking to engage in extreme action sports, this is the point!

Another popular choice is white water rafting. This is usually done is a small group of people who all enter a large raft and paddle themselves downhill through rapids and fast moving water in search of a thrill. The speed of the currents inject the sense of danger, as if anyone was to fall off the boat they could easily get caught up in the water and drown. However, the strict safety measure and rigorous training protocols that teachers undergo ensure this is unlikely.

Paragliding is another great extreme sport to try. With a large glider attached, you take a running jump off a cliff and use the currents of air to float through the sky until landing. Other equally exciting options are hot air ballooning, sky diving and even alpine skiing, with each designed to inject a sense of danger in your sporting activities!

Paragliding is truly one of the most unique sports out there. Few things can compare with the feelings of gliding through the sky at the same heights as the birds! Of course, one of the most important things about paragliding is the location you choose to do it. Luckily, there are several sites across the U.S. that are ideal for paragliding.

Utah has some of the most spectacular sites for paragliding in the country. One of the most notable for beginner pilots is Crawford Mountain. Although it is a good place to start, the mountain is also ideal for more experienced flyers. With a vertical height of 1800ft and a possible altitude of around 8000ft, you can be sure you will catch some breath taking views of the surrounding area!

For those wishing to go even higher, the Snowbird ski resort near Salt Lake City is an excellent place to go paragliding. This is designed for more experienced gliders, although if you have had enough practice you can reap the rewards of a great glide. The site also offers great potential to travel cross country on your glider, with some pilots travelling as far as 150 miles!

Of course, for absolute beginners there is Olympus. The 5600ft drop makes it a great place to learn, although due to the location you do have to have excellent landing skills. Flights that travel as far as 13 miles are a common occurrence here, offering a great place for newcomers to cut their teeth.

The U.S. offers some of the greatest spots to go hand gliding in the world. The natural rocky and mountainous landscape offers spectacular vantage points for pilots to get the perfect run up and experience the ideal flight. If you are travelling cross country, just be aware you might have a long journey back!
